Siskiyou Woodcraft Guild Newsletter:

January  2008

Welcome to the New Year! May we all have good projects and good wood in our shops to work on. For the SWG we have a new Class to prepare for, Shop-Chats to schedule, Officers and Steering members to vote for, and future Shows to talk about (at the General meeting) . These activities are fantastic, when enough of our talented members participate.

Our 'Guild' depends on each member to be part of this volunteer Network of woodworkers who want to be share info. and promote quality work. These opportunities are only available because many members continue to offer their time and commitment to assist with getting the small & large tasks done: Teachers, Officers , Web-master, Coordinators, and Steering Members. It takes a lot of people and work to keep our small 'club' going, we thank them/ you all for your efforts and involvement.

Our members are our most valuable resource, you are reason the SWG exists. Many of you know that Alec Williamson had Triple By-Pass surgery this past November. I am glad to say all aspects of the surgery went smoothly and he is recovering well (visitors are welcome, call first please). This was not a planned operation and came as a big surprise (as did the heart attack prompting it). Another reminder how careful we must be of our overall health and safety, so we can stay active, able and strong enough to build beautiful things from wood.

SCHEDULE OF GENERAL MEETING AND CLASS START:

We are holding our General Meeting on Tuesday Jan. 22, 6:30pm- 8:30, in the Ashland High School  Shop. 482-8771, ext.214, is the phone # there, and John Weston's home # 488-2547. It is located on Morse St. east/ down from Siskiyou Blvd. near the second parking lot on the north side of the campus (Mountain Ave borders the south side of the campus). Plenty of parking along the street, too, as the AHS track field
is right along there. The agenda includes Voting for our Officers and Steering Committee, Class prep., Show schedule for the year, 2007Report from Treasurer, Web-site and others topics. Fortunately, most of our officers and Steering Comm. are willing to continue (if re-elected) in their positions. We will be looking to find new Coordinator(s) for the show(s), and a new Treasurer to fill Jens Sehm's position, as he is getting too busy with out-of-town jobs. He deserves our BIG gratitude for his many years of commitment to your SWG.

The Insight Classes will be coordinated by Tony Scolaro and John Weston. The first night will be held on Tuesday, 2/12/08, 6:30p-9:00p, at Farrest Loper's Shop, in Talent. The teaching staff and schedule are being worked on now, so if you have an interest in being more involved, give them a call. The teachers' dinner will be held a week or two before starting, to be determined later. The Registration form will be available on our web-site , so you can encourage friends to sign up by downloading a copy .

We should ALL try to figure out ways to promote safety! As we get hurried, tired, or just older and set in our ways is when accidents can happen. If you can do some thing unsafe for years doesn't make it now safe. I was not the one to teach the OSHA course on skill saw safety. I could do things with them that were amazing. Young men would try to copy my skill and get in trouble. I had to teach them the right way, not
my way. Even though I did these acts successfully for many years I have lost that skill. I don't use them like that anymore. This is what we need to teach. If something seems scary, it is . Don't do it. Find a safer way.

Suggestions to Shop Chat Hosts

Members of our Guild are very interested in the varied skills of our group, their special techniques, tool utilization, shop set-ups, etc. The shop chat is an opportunity for you, the host, to share your insights, successes, strategies, disappointments along the way, etc. You could give a short introduction and/or a walk around your shop, answering questions, perhaps demonstrating an aspect unique to your particular work. The chat can be as structured or as casual as you feel comfortable hosting. Remember, we're all in this together!

Attendees may bring a snack/ beverage to share and a chair, if they want.
